NPCs have been a ubiquitous feature of video games since the dawn of the digital gaming era, whether it’s a single-player adventure or an online multiplayer adventure. NPCs are what give life to a game and make its world believable and alive.
Abbreviation for non-player characters, the NPCs of terrariums are friendly automated characters that provide services to players.
To interact with an NPC, the player must stand near an NPC and press the “Open/Activate” button to open a dialog window with one or more options for the player to select. The majority of NPCs are vendors who display shop inventory when the “Shop” option is selected.
These NPCs sell items to players in exchange for coins while also being able to purchase items from a player for coins. A few NPCs have options to perform other functions.
While NPCs in a regular game would play a very unintegrated role, they act a bit differently in the world of terrariums.
How many NPCs are there in terrariums?
There are a total of 29 NPCs as well as three pets which are considered special NPCs. Each NPC requires certain conditions to be met in order to unlock them, other than the Guide, which is the only NPC that will be present in your town at the start of the game.
To make it a little clearer, in terrariumsthere is:
- 18 town NPCs in normal mode.
- Eight town NPCs found only in Hardmode.
- Three NPCs that are outside of town.
- Three pets for which you must purchase licenses.
How do I get NPCs to move in? How do they work?
The majority of NPCs in terrariums are town NPCs that only appear after a large number of stages have been completed while progressing through the game. They move into houses that the player must provide, which are necessary for NPCs to of the city remain available, in most cases.
Each NPC needs their own house, with one exception where a familiar NPC and an unfamiliar NPC can share a house.
NPCs that have moved into houses reduce enemy spawn rates in the area. This effect only increases the more NPCs there are present; having at least three town NPCs nearby will, in most cases, prevent NPCs from spawning on or near the visible screen (unless you are playing on Expert or Master mode).
NPCs usually wander around during the day and stay still in their homes at night or during events.
NPCs have a limited health pool and are vulnerable to damage. They can die at the hands of enemies, lava, traps, or by drowning in water, but conversely take no fall damage and have their health restored over a period of time.
If an NPC is killed, they will not respawn until the next day. In some cases, an NPC may need a specific item in your inventory to respawn, such as the Arms Dealer which requires bullets and the Demolisher which requires explosives.
Most NPCs can also defend themselves as they have their own weapons, which is useful when enemies invade your town, especially during events such as Blood Moons.
NPCs also cannot be directly attacked by players, unless using rotten eggs or special voodoo doll accessories.
What is the ideal room for an NPC to move into?
Along with each unique NPC requirement you’ll need to meet, you’ll also need to build a room for each NPC that meets their standards for them to move into. An NPC will automatically move in after a certain amount of time since building the Perfect Room.
An ideal bedroom has:
- A living space of at least 60 blocks in total, including floor, ceiling, and walls. A room larger than 750 blocks is too big.
- All kinds of flat surfaces such as workbenches or work tables.
- Any kind of light source.
- Any type of chair.
- Walls and ceiling built with pure materials.
- Background walls created by players.
- At least one entrance to the room such as a door, platform, etc.
