Saudi Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Council for Economic Affairs and Development, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, unveils the National Strategy for Gaming and Electronic Sports which marks the start of a new era to lead the gaming industry,
This will make Saudi Arabia the global hub of this sector by 2030, which will help achieve the goals of Vision 2030 to diversify the economy, create new jobs in various sectors and provide world-class entertainment to citizens, residents and visitors, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said.
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince underlined: The National Strategy for Games and Electronic Sports is driven by the creativity and energy of our citizens and gamers, who are at the heart of the strategy. We respond to the ambitions of the gaming community in Saudi Arabia and around the world, with an exciting new career and unique entertainment opportunities; aiming to make Saudi Arabia the global hub of this sector by 2030.
The strategy includes 3 main objectives that have a direct impact on citizens, the private sector, fans and professionals of games and esports around the world, namely to improve the quality of life by improving the experience of players, by offering new entertainment opportunities and achieve economic impact by contributing to the gross domestic product of approximately 50 billion riyals directly and indirectly, as well as the creation of 39,000 new direct and indirect employment opportunities by 2030, providing the basic environment for skills development and aiming to achieve global leadership and improve the Kingdom’s position on the international stage, through the production of more than 30 globally competitive games in the Kingdom’s studios, and reaching the top three countries by number of professional esports players.
The launch of the strategy by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince is a continuation of the many initiatives and major successes achieved by the Kingdom in the entertainment, sports and video game sectors, as part of Vision 2030. This is particularly important given the rapid growth that this sector is experiencing which will create new opportunities that require the existence of a national strategy to harness the untapped capacities and potential of the Kingdom; leading developments in this sector, ensuring integration with other strategic sectors, maximizing benefits to the country’s economy and empowering citizens.
The Kingdom intends to implement this strategy through 86 initiatives covering the entire value chain, launched and managed by more than 20 governmental and private entities, from the launch of business incubators and the hosting of events for games and electronic sports, the establishment of educational academies and the development of stimulating regulations to keep pace with the rapid growth of this sector. These initiatives are divided into 8 priority areas including technology and hardware development, game production, esports, additional services and other enabling aspects which include infrastructure, regulation, education and talent acquisition, as well as funding and financial support.
The gaming and esports sector is considered the fastest growing among all media sectors, and its audience is growing rapidly, making it an economy in itself, and is expected to reach $200 billion in ‘by 2023. It also constitutes the position of the Kingdom as a geographical link. between East and West and its young population of around 21M. Such elements will reinforce the Kingdom’s ambition to be a global hub for future gaming innovation, an attraction for game developers around the world, and a global hub for esports, attracting international talent and businesses. and helping to achieve local and global impact in the sector, in line with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
