According to recent rumors, Team Liquid’s ADC Steven “Hans Sama” Liv is set to leave the North American esports organization before next season. But instead of joining another League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) team, the French ADC are reportedly looking to return to Europe for 2023.
Changes on the horizon
Hans Sama joined Team Liquid as one of the most prolific signings of the 2022 pre-season. He signed a two-year contract with the North American esports organization, which was looking to create the next super-team , which included some of the best players in Western LoL.
In addition to signing Hans Sama, Liquid also acquired Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau and Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg, who teamed up with Lucas “Santorin” Tao Kilmer Larsen and Jo “CoreJJ” Yong-in, forming one of the rosters. the most stacked and experienced in the League. But despite having a star-studded squad, Team Liquid fell short of expectations.
Still, Liquid got off to a good start, winning the 2022 LCS Lock-In Tournament and the 2022 LCS Spring Regular Season with a 14-4 record. Unfortunately, the team fell short in the 2022 LCS Spring Playoffs, which Liquid finished in third place.
From there, Liquid struggled to emulate their early season success and finished the 2022 LCS Summer Regular Season in third place. But the worst is yet to come.
Despite locking in a top seed for the 2022 LCS Championship, Team Liquid failed to live up to their name as the primary favorite and pulled out of the playoffs in fourth place with losses to 100 Thieves and Evil Geniuses. So not only did Liquid fail to win the LCS title, but the prominent North American esports organization also missed out on qualifying for the LoL World Championship.
After what was billed by many as a very disappointing season, Team Liquid naturally decided to make some changes to their lineup. And although it hasn’t yet been revealed which players will leave the team ahead of the 2023 season, recent reports suggest that Hans Sama is very likely to leave.
Hans Sama approaching the exit doors
Hans Sama joined Team Liquid on November 23, 2022, as one of the key parts of Liquid’s plan to build the next LCS super-team. ADC, 23, came to Team Liquid from Rogue, with whom he spent two years competing in the LoL European Championship (LEC).
With Rogue, Hans Sama didn’t win a single LCS title, but he helped the European organization establish themselves as one of the best teams in the region. Notably, with Rogue, Hans Sama won the LEC 2020 Summer and LEC 2021 Summer regular seasons and won bronze medals in both Summer Playoffs.
Widely regarded as one of the best ADC players in Europe, Hans Sama was expected to play a key role in Liquid’s plan to dominate the LEC, but the plans fell through. Yet, despite the team’s lack of success in the 2022 season, Hans Sama showed up individually, averaging some of the best performances in his position.
But regardless of his individual performances, Hans Sama and Liquid are expected to part ways before the 2023 season, mainly due to Hans Sama’s desire to return to Europe.
Hans Sama’s next stop
Although Hans Sama’s departure from Liquid has yet to be confirmed, recent reports suggest that the French ADC have already set their sights on LEC, and one team in particular. Many reports link Hans Sama to reigning European Masters champions Karmine Corp, who are set to join the LEC next season.
If the rumors turn out to be true and Hans Sama ends up joining Karmine Corp, he would replace Carl Martin Erik “Rekkles” Larsson, who is believed to be allowed to explore his options and make a triumphant return to the LEC after spending the last season to compete in the French regional league.
