Rumors of FaZe Clan joining the pro Apex Legends the scene has been swirling for quite a while now. It doesn’t hurt that they now have several players who played in the North American ALGS Pro League between NICKMERCS and Eric “Snip3down” Wrona.
However, a slip from Snip3down put the competition Summit The community is on fire with rumors that FaZe may be considering signing a pro team. The potential squad would include a potential full-time return to Summit by Snip3down, where he would compete alongside Mac “Albralelie” Beckwith and TSM’s SlurpeeG, who also competed in the ALGS Pro League last year.
The possible leak came yesterday when Snip3down joined Albralelie’s party ahead of the ongoing FLL tournament, in which the two and SlurpeeG were playing together as Team ASS, an acronym formed by the first initial of their three handles in game. Snip3down can be heard talking about coaching practices and research before he starts talking about how he spoke to FaZe Clan. “I talked to FaZe. Everything is fine with FaZe,” Snip3down says. “They’re totally ready to have everyone—”
“I’m streaming, Snip3,” Albralelie quickly chimes in, which cuts off the conversation almost immediately. “Oh, Jesus Christ,” Snip3down says before laughter and awkward pauses fill the steam.
The comedy of the moment is only made greater by the fact that SlurpeeG walks into the Discord call, hears the laughter, and immediately assumes that Albralelie and Snip3down laughed at him.
Obviously, there is no confirmation that the trio will be signed as new FaZe Clan. Summit crew. But there are a few other indications that this might be the case aside from the reference of Snip3down talking to FaZe Clan about the plans and Albralelie immediately cutting it off, indicating that the discussion shouldn’t have gone public. For one, Snip3down remains a FaZe Clan player, even though he no longer plays for FaZe’s Halo team and competed with eUnited. The ASS team has been in constant competition for over a month, and with the ALGS only a few weeks away, the three players continuing to play together, if they had no intention of continuing as a team, no wouldn’t make much sense.
Additionally, detectives from the Competitive Summit subreddit pointed out that there is one more team invited to the North American Pro League that is still “to be announced”. Although the team does not technically qualify for a Pro League invitation as a team based on the invitation criteria previously stated, all three players participated in last year’s Pro League, and there would make sense for the ALGS to offer the team a spot if they tried to woo an organization as big as FaZe.
On paper, the team has serious potential. Both Snip3down and SlurpeeG have a reputation for being two of the most fearful controllers in the game, while Albralelie remains a consensus choice for one of North America’s top all-rounders. The question is how the team will gel and how Albralelie will settle into the unique IGL role after competing with multiple teams in a hybrid fragger and sometimes co-IGL position.
Still, if FaZe Clan wants to go pro Summit, it’s clearly the best free agent team to do it, short of buying out Team Liquid’s contracts. ALGS pre-season qualifying begins October 8. If the SSA team does not play there, a little more smoke will be added to this fire.
